The twist out is low maintenance and looks great! All Things O’Natural

Low-Maintenance and Versatile Hairstyle

The twist out is a great hairstyle for natural African American women. It adds volume and waves to your hair, depending on the size of your twists. It’s very versatile, so you can wear twists in an updo, or let it hang loose! Also, it is a low-maintenance hairstyle, in case you need a break from your morning hair routine.

How to Do a Twist Out With Dry Hair

  1. Make sure that your hair is clean.
  2. Part the hair into four sections by parting the hair down the middle and across the top of the head.
  3. Choose a section to begin your twists (doing the back first is easier). Once you’ve chosen your section, create a small part at the bottom of the section so that there is a horizontal line of hair.
  4. Section the amount of hair for one twist. Take a half index fingerprint of the product of your choice and apply it to the amount of hair you want to twist.
  5. Take two strands of hair, and wrap them around each other all the way down to the ends. When you get to the end of the twist, wrap the hair around the finger for a curly end. Continue this until you have twisted the entire horizontal part.
  6. Repeat steps 4-5 until the entire section has been completed. Once you’ve completed one section, move on to the next one and repeat steps 3-5 until all of the hair is twisted.

How to Do a Twist Out With Wet Hair

A twist out with wet hair can last much longer than a twist out with dry hair.

  1. Shampoo and condition your hair as normal.
  2. Towel dry your hair until it’s damp.
  3. Apply moisturizer to your hair. There are a lot of products to choose from, so it’s important to choose one that best matches your personal needs.
  4. Part your hair into four sections, and hold it in place with clips.
  5. Repeat steps 2-6 of how to twist dry hair (above).

How to Dry Your Hair

You have a couple of options. You can blow dry it with a blow dryer, or you can let it air dry. Air drying is safer for your hair, but if you’re going outside into a cool climate, it may not be in your best interest to let it air dry.

Important Tips

  • Your twists will poof out after a while, so if they appear small at first, don’t worry! Be sure to make them a little smaller than you would like so they will poof into the right size.
  • After having twists in your hair for a while, you can take them out and rock one stylish afro. The key to making it big: at the same time, pull your hair away from you and blow dry it!
  • If your parts are not perfect, that’s okay. Having the parts a little off makes your hair appear more full.
  • When you take your twists out to make a full afro style, do not comb through your hair! You will mess up your beautiful wave pattern!

Enjoy your twist out!
